Programs
Participation in the ARMI Proficiency testing programs for stainless steel and tool steels on a quarterly basis allows the Chem Lab to compare testing methodologies with other similar labs in the world. The Chemical Laboratory has been involved with chemical standard development since the early 1900’s, and continues to be involved with developing certified reference materials to be used worldwide.
Evaluations And Calibrations
All the analytical equipment, capable of being calibrated is calibrated to traceable reference materials for use in the analysis of iron based material within the elemental ranges listed below: Arsenic | | >.003% | to | .10% | Aluminum | | >.005% | to | 3.00% | Boron | | >.0001% | to | .02% | Carbon | | >.001% | to | 3.80% | Chromium | | >.01% | to | 30.00% | Cobalt | | >.002% | to | 16.00% | Copper | | >.01% | to | 4.00% | Iron | | >.40% | to | 100.00% | Lead | | >.0005% | to | .13% | Manganese | | >.01% | to | 12.00% | Molybdenum | | >.01% | to | 11.50% | Nickel | | >.01% | to | 40.00% | Niobium | | >.01% | to | 4.00% | Nitrogen | | >.0005% | to | .60% | Oxygen | | >.0005% | to | .50% | Phosphorous | | >.005% | to | .30% | Selenium | | >.01% | to | .40% | Silicon | | >.01% | to | 4.50 % | Sulfur | | >.001% | to | .45% | Tantalum | | >.005% | to | .20% | Tin | | >.01% | to | .20% | Titanium | | >.01% | to | 3.00% | Tungsten | | >.01% | to | 20.00% | Vanadium | | >.01% | to | 18.00% |
The following tests are performed in the Chem Lab to offer internal control of chemical related processes: The analysis of pickling, degreasing and coating solutions is performed on an Automatic Titrator. The analysis of oils is performed using a liquid particle counter with laser technology. Testing is conducted to determine the condition of the oils used in various machinery throughout the mill. Sieve analysis of granular metal powders. |
